Cris’ IT Maintenance Facility

The Church Nursery School asked me to find new laptops for all their teachers, so after a bit of shopping around I decided on these 15″ Ideapad 330s‘s from Lenovo (this configuration is an exclusive to B&H). They are a pretty well spec’d machine for the price, and they currently have a $50 rebate, and even better they come with an M2 slot on the motherboard πŸ™‚

Not to get into ridiculous detail, but an M2 drive is an incredibly fast hard drive about the size of a stick of chewing gum, it is about 6 x faster than a regular SSD drive and about 20 x faster than an old-fashioned platter hard-drive. I bought one laptop first to test it out, and after spending the $50 rebate on a 120GB M2 drive, installing it and then moving windows over onto it I found I had a laptop that booted fully into Windows 10 from nothing to fully booted and ready to use in about 8 seconds! The original 1TB hard drive will stay and be tons of storage for documents and pictures etc, but Windows and apps will run lightning fast off the M2 drive- the best of both worlds πŸ™‚

The only problem with this cunning plan is that once I had ordered 6 more laptops and M2 drives I had to install them all, which I spent a happy hour doing this morning…

Then I just had to replace the back of the laptop and repeat 5 more times.

Now that that’s all done, tomorrow I will line them up and boot into Windows and set it up for each user, then on each one I just have to clone Windows onto the M2 drive and tweak the BIOS so it will boot from that drive instead, tell it to us the old, original drive for storage, install Microsoft Office and, on some of them, move their old documents etc. from their old laptops onto these new ones.

Piece of cake πŸ˜‰
