Roofing Work

Sorry that there haven’t been any pictures the last couple of days.

I developed this weird skin complaint on Sunday afternoon- it felt like I had a really bad sunburn on my chest, stomach and thighs, but there was no redness, the skin just felt really tender. So, on Monday morning after dropping Crispy at camp I went to the Urgent Care walk-in at our doctor, and it turns out I have Herpes Zoster– or Shingles to the rest of us.

Luckily this is not the “bad” Herpes, it’s the Chicken Pox virus that you have as a kid that lays dormant somewhere in the nerve root in your spine and can flare up in later life as Shingles. No-one seems to know what triggers it, but suspects can be stress, aging, illness etc. It was *really* humid on Sunday so maybe the heat and all the sweat under my robes had something to do with it- but actually I blame George Bush.

So, they put me on an anti-viral (Valtrex) which doesn’t cure it but suppresses the symptoms if you can start it early enough, and apparantly I caught it just about as early as you can (so remember children- go to the doctor sooner rather than later when you have anything you can’t explain!). But even so it looks like I’m in for at least 2-3 weeks of discomfort. I really hope it’s done before we fly to Blighty!

Jake had Chicken Pox when she was a kid, and Crispy has had the shots, and supposedly I can only pass on Chicken Pox from this for a short period (when the rash that has developed blisters and oozes- nice huh?), so I’m still going to try and go about life as close as possible to normal.

It’s really weird- the rash is like half a belt right above my waistline- it stays on one side of your body only, and in fact only one side of my chest and belly and only one thigh is tender. I’ve been sleeping in my rash-guard (which is skin-tight, otherwise known as my “only gay in the village” shirt), and Jackie got me some tight wife beaters to wear under my T-shirts during the day. I slept better last night, but I think that had more to do with the Tylenol with Codeine they gave me!

Heat is supposed to make it worse, and as it’s going to be in the 90s for the rest of this week I’m going to rearrange the plans I had to work in the parking lot and on some other manual-labor projects and try and stay in the AC. The lower back ache on the right I had yesterday seems to be a little better today, but I don’t know if that’s the Valtrex or that the back ache had more to do with me walking hunched over to keep my T-shirt from rubbing on my chest yesterday- we’ll see how I feel at the end of today.

So, that’s it, I’ve felt like crap the last couple of days, but I actually feel a little better this morning. Maybe it’s the Valtrex, or maybe I’m just getting resigned/used to it. Anyhow, got to get to work- TTFN
